Phonics instruction is a method of teaching reading and spelling using the sound/symbol relationships in the alphabet. When students learn phonics, they can decode words based on their knowledge of the letters in the alphabet and the sounds they make either individually or in combination with other letters. Phonics skills are important for early readers; however, knowing phonics does not ensure that students are comprehending what they are reading. Therefore, phonics instruction is only one component of a balanced literacy program.
