Phonological and Phonemic Awareness

Phonological awareness is the overarching umbrella that is used to define the knowledge of the sound structure of words on three levels: 1) syllables, 2) onsets (beginning sounds) and rimes (ending sounds), and 3) phonemes (individual sounds). Phonemic awareness is the ability to identify, hear, and manipulate individual phonemes (sounds) in words. Phonological and phonemic awareness are important building blocks for learning to read.
