Text Complexity

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) have teachers look not at the traditional quantitative readability level of text but also at what they call text complexity which has 3 components:
1) Quantitative Measure: A quantitative measure to assign a grade level band
2) Qualitative Analysis: Qualitiative measures that help teachers determine how complex the concepts in a text are
3) Reader and Task Considerations: A professional judgement component designed to help teachers decide whether the text is appropriately matched to a given set of students
Text complexity is represented by the graphic below which consists of three small triangles that are placed together to form one large triangle. Reader and Task Considerations form the foundation for text complexity.
